XP stop error

I have a laptop running XP home. It was up to date but after a 2 week break
it was reporting that 52 Microsoft updates were ready to install. After
restarting I got the stop error 0x0000007F.

I have read the Microsoft article which suggest it most likely a hardware
fault but no hardware has been changed and i have tried re-seating the ram.

I can start up in safe mode but I get the same stop error if I start up in
safe mode with networking.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.
