XP startup problem

My XP Home Edition is not booting up. Getting a message -
windows could not start because the following file is
missing or currupt: \windows\system32\config\system

you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows
setup using the original CD Rom.
select R at the first screen to repair.

I tried that, and after selecting R to repair it goes to
the recovery consol where it shows 1. C:\windows and
asking - whichwindows installation you like to log onto.
I typed 1 and the screen displayed C:\windows.
I dont know what to do or where to go from here. pressing
Ener displays the same prompt.
