XP Startup files and services not loading

Strangely all startup files (registry and startup-folder)
which are in location D:\Program Files are NOT loaded
(i.e. ICQ, InCD and so on). Whereas everything
in /system32 folder is loaded.
Even when I try to install a software which needs a
service to be started it stops giving the error message
it can't install the service.

In addition to this normally Acrobat Reader starts when I
open a .pdf File with IExplorer. Since about the same
time with the above problem I have to start AcrobatReader
before I open the .pdf File.

Can anyone help with this??

Volker

Found one part of the problem:
I have to set D:\Program Files in registry to: D:\PROGRA~1
Then the startup files are loaded.
Is there a way to change this - I mean: to get back
to "Program Files" syntax??
