XP start up problems

I am running windows xp home (gateway 300s) w/ SP2 and have th
following problems:

1. when I power up the machine, XP will not start properly. It wil
keep trying but nothing happens. The only way I can get it to start i
when a DOS screen appears, I toggle to a setting that says somethin
like "start windows from the last good configuration" (the last know
settings that worked). If I select this option, xp will start and
can use the machine normally. I hope I can fix this withou
reinstalling windows so that my machine will start up and shut dow
properly!

2. Becasue of this I cannot install a local printer. I can install m
brother MFC-5440CN and use it during that session, but if I power dow
and restart, the "new hardware wizard" starts and trys to re-instal
the drivers. If I dont re-install every time, the printer will not sho
up in the printer folder.

This computer was a gift from a friend, so I am trying to get i
running in tip top shape...Please help

Sounds like drivers problem to me. Boot the machine in "Last known good
configuration" state. Try to remove all the drivers from the Device Manager
tab and reboot in Safe Mode to allow OS to find the basic drivers of your PC.
Then reboot in Normal to find the rest of the drivers. For all this, your
printer must be disconnected from the usb cable. Install the printer drivers
from the manufacturer cd and then connect the usb cable of your printer. The
above procedure doesn't always work.
