XP - SP3

With XP-SP3 available from WU is there any info on how the download went ?
Also would it be wise to turn off all AV's and AS's even Defender before
the
install ? Any other pointers for this update ? Ron

Hi Ron,

I turned off AVG and Spybot resident before installing SP3 on two machines,
and the SP3 installation went without a hitch.

I DID have problems, though, on one PC after I downloaded and installed AVG
8 free edition two days after installing SP3. After I installed AVG 8 on one
machine and rebooted, I lost connectivity to my wireless adapter.

I mucked around for 5 hours and eventually uninstalled AVG 8, uninstalled
SP3, and did a System Restore back to before both SP3 and AVG 8 were
installed.

Once I did this, I deleted and reinstalled my Netgear adapter to make sure
that I had connectivity -- I did.

Then I re-installed AVG 7.5 and made sure I had connectivity -- and I did.

Finally, I reinstalled SP3 and made sure I had connectivity, which I did.

I'm not about to try AVG 8.0 anytime soon with SP3.

If AVG will not be issuing updates after May 31, then I will probably go to
AVAST.

1.Make an Image backup of the hard drive/Windows Partition before you
install SP3,

2.Test your System Restore to see if it is working correctly.

3. Make absolutely sure the machine's free of any hijackware, Trojan, or
virus infections before installing SP3.

4. Run Disk Cleanup then run a Defrag session before installing SP3.

5. Disable all real-time protections (anti-virus; anti-spyware; third-party
firewall[yuck]) before installing SP3.

6. Reboot twice after installing SP3.

And I have to say that I have personally installed SP3 dozens of times
without taking any of these steps. (well, 6 has surely happened!) However,
these were staid business desktop machines for which 3 and 4 are pretty much
the rule.

This is reassuring, Bill.

Since you're probably the safest pair of hands I know - may I ask you a
couple of questions about this?

1. My inclination is to wait a few weeks, just to see what problems, if any,
emerge. Can you think of any reason why I shouldn't do that?
2. Do I actually NEED SP3 at all? Are there significant security issues that
would leave the system vulnerable, if I chose not to bother with it?

I installed it this morning on my machine without turning anything off,
NOD32 v3, SuperAntiSpyware, Windows Defender, Online Armor, OneNote and
ProcessQuickLink2.

I know I shouldn't be so reckless but everything went OK <g>

There's no great harm in waiting.

Here's a link to an "overview" document about what's in SP3:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ad-bc34-40be-8d85-6bb4f56f5110&displaylang=en

While a good bit of the "new functionality" in SP3 is security-related, it
is possible that very little of that will be of interest or use to the
average home user--there are some significant improvements in text related
to security settings that we all will see, though.

I would urge everyone to keep any version of Windows up to the current
Service Pack version. The SP's include a large collection of bug fixes, as
well as all previous security patches, and some new stuff--which in the case
of SP3 is largely behind the scenes kind of stuff. Many XP users will
remember that Service Pack 2 made some significant changes that, while
making XP more secure, did impact users experience. This was not the norm
for service packs--and SP3 will not be noticed by most users.

Which is not to say that it isn't doing significant things behind the scenes
to make you safer--just that there's very little change to what the average
user will see--so don't be afraid of a learning curve.

About the only significant thing I can recall having heard of currently is a
possible compatibility issue with AVG 8, which has been discussed here--and
I haven't kept track of the details.

Thanks everyone, Most of what i read is what i needed to hear to put me more
at ease with this install. Kayman thanks for the remind to defrag, i don't
think
i would've remembered. Thank You Ron

That's really helpful, thanks. The AVG8 issue is one of the things that
incline me to wait - and since I'm waiting for AVG8's service pack1 already
(before switching from 7.5), I may as well wait for the Sp3 incompatibility
to be resolved as well. Thanks for this, Bill.

I installed XP SP3 this morning (took quite a while) and run Comodo Firewall
and AVG 8.0.93 without any problems. The install took longer than the
preceding full backup to the point that I thought it the install had
stalled.

That's interesting- I really don't have a clear picture of the time to
install--I usually did several machines at once via Remote Desktop, and I
wasn't sitting around watching once the final prompt was past. Must have
been longer than I thought.

In addition to Bill's reply I'd like to say that I have installed SP3
when it first became available on MSDN/Technet, and I have noticed a
significant performance increase after the installation. Booting Windows
takes about half of the time it did before, and Outlook runs noticeable
faster than before.

I think this alone is really worth taking "the plunge". However, I agree
that a few precautions (malware scans, full backup) will significantly
lower the risk of an upgrade failure.

I've been running AVG 8 Pro (current build 8.0.93, virus DB
269.23.10/1421 [today's update]) from shortly after it was
available, and had no problem installing SP3. I downloaded the
316MB offline installer, backed up the system, shut off the
network feed, and disabled AVG 8's resident scanner.

The version of AVG 8 I have does not include the firewall (AV and
Anti-Spyware only), so YMMV if you have the firewall option. I
don't know what build AVG 8 Free is shipping (presumably, the
latest or something close). That seems a likely starting point.

Hi George,

I realize that in my earlier post I had associated my problems with the
installation of AVG 8. Actually it was more tangentially associated with AVG
8.

My problems really began upon re-booting after I first uninstalled AVG 7.5
in preparation for the installation of AVG 8.

It was then that I lost connectivity and I had to go through all the steps
in my first post -- including the re-installation of AVG 7.5 -- to
re-establish my wireless connectivity.

Thanks for this, Engel (that second link makes me ponder a bit, having been
tripped up by an ATI driver last year with a Windows update ).

I hope you're doing OK? Feeling better?

Hi Alan. The only advice I can give is not to attempt installing SP3 until
MIcrosoft have fixed all the bugs with it. I attempted (via UA) to install
last night and, while intitial installation went OK, when I got the message
installation finishening and Startin running processes my PC hung for 3
hours. I have been up have the night to get to install properly, but without
success. I would be grateful for any suggestions out there
