XP SP3: Network folder: Access denied

Andi

Hi folks,

yesterday i sntalled SP3 on my both XP Pro PCs - LAPTOP and BIGONE

Installation was successful.

Now I can not access Network folders on LAPTOP.

The other way round is no problem: Access Network folders on BIGONE

The share settings are the same: There is only only user XYZ allowed.

User XYZ exists on both PCs with the same password.

Update: with Share settings "all Users" instead of "user XYZ" i can
access the folder.
But is this not possible with just this special user?

Any ideas?

Andi

Andi,

Is Advanced File Sharing still Enabled on both computers? Is this user XYZ
still Activated for network access?

Any further ideas?

Those are the most common problems, discussed in the tutorial. If they don't
provide a solution on their own, maybe the linked articles will give you some
clues.

Check the Sharing and Security settings for the folder - is user XYZ
permissioned? Are passwords non-blank and identical on both computers? Is the
Local Security Policy proper for user XYZ?

I checked the settings:

If your server uses non-Guest authentication:

* The non-Guest account must be properly setup, and activated for
network use.
* The non-Guest account must NOT be in list #1.
* The non-Guest account, or a group of which it is a member (generally
"Everyone"), must be in list #2.

All the above settings are set.

What can I do else? Check any log files?

Andi

Andi,

OK, having covered the issues specifically related to file sharing, look at the
symptom "access denied" overall.

The main log is System Events.

And diagnose from the bottom up.

Andi,

From what you just told me, no clues.
"Something was working, then it stopped. I didn't change anything."
What clues would you see in that statement?

I'll offer you my first tutorial.

Hi,

checked your links and set it exactly as it is written there.

But check out what I found out:

If allow (full) access only to user XYZ it get "access denied".
But if I allow (full) access to another user ABC (which is on set on both
PCs) I get access to the shared folder.

Can you explain that to me?

Not sitting in front of the computer, regretfully I can't. If you've been
through the general network troubleshooting, I'll next refer you to my tutorial
on file sharing troubleshooting, which delves into details about file sharing.
Maybe there's a clue in there.
