XP SP3 Beta RC1 no boot issue

G

Gareth Taylor

I have installed XP SP3 Beta RC1. Once installation was completed I rebooted
as prompted but the system no longer boots into windows, it instead 'loops'
on
the logo/progress bar screen.

Has anyone else experienced this? I would prefer to find a way to remove the
service pack or make it work before I resort to rebuilding the system from
backups.

Also how do I report this problem to the Beta team?

Thanks,
Gareth.

When you test beta products then using an imaging product such
as Acronis TrueImage or Ghost is compulsory. It would let you
restore a failed installation in minutes.

Boot to safe mode if you can, then uninstall SP3

When trying to boot into safe mode it hangs on mup.sys

I guess a restore from a backup image is the only option then?

yes...restore from backup...

My *guess* is that a repair install with an XP_sp2 cd would not commence

You can't. You're not a registered MS beta tester. Sour grapes. Try
uninstalling in safe mode.

Hello Gareth,

This post appears to concern a product that has not yet been released. The
Newsgroups provide break/fix based technical support for selected released
products.

You may find support for most beta products from Microsoft Corporation at
http://beta.microsoft.com/, as well as public newsgroups that development
may have established to support unreleased products.

Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks & Regards,

Hello all,

Thank you for your replies.

I am a Technet subscriber and obtained the Beta through this program. I must
say it is disappointing to be given access to the official download but not
to be made aware of the correct channels for seeking support or reporting
the results of our system testing. Those of you who have experience with
Betas may know where to turn but but we are relatively new to Technet and
this is our experience so far.

Gareth.

You could fire off an e-mail to the Technet folks and see what they
say. This group is not the best place to ask the questions regarding
RC1.

By the way, I'd like to share some of my experiences for your reference.
You may try following steps to check if the computer can boot.

Solution 1:
========

1.Press F8 when you reboot your computer.

2.Select "Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that
worked)"

3.Select "Windows XP Professional"

Solution 2:
========

You may try to uninstall Windows XP SP3 RC0 Beta based on the following KB.

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350

This KB is completely works on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and it should be
works on Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC1

Solution 3:
========

You may perform an in-place upgrade to repair this computer. For detailed
steps, please refer to Method 2 in the following KB article:

315341 How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315341

This method will replace the system files to the original versions.
Therefore, if the system can boot correct after the in-place upgrade,
please apply Windows XP SP2 and other updates.

I hope any solution above can help you, If all the solution doesn't work,
please post in following TechNet Forum in order to get the most qualified
