XP SP3 and WDM install problem

Doing my annual format and re-install of Windows and decided to
install the available SP3 update. When I went to install the WDM for
my AIW 9600, I got an Internal Failure 0x80040707 message and then a
islayer.dll not loaded message. This happened with both the latest ATI
drivers as well as the latest Omega drivers. Previously I've had the
AIW working perfectly under SP2 as well as SP1 and the original
release of XP so this is a problem specific to SP3 and quite possibly
my h/w and s/w config.

Very long story dramatically shorter:

create a Desktop folder in C:/ Documents and Settings/All Users/ and
the install will go on without a hitch. Not sure why in makes a
difference but it does.

Only problem is now I get a Failure To Intitialize error with MMC so
I'll give AMCap a try later on as I'm not a fan of MMC anyway.

Didn't really anticipate this kind of problem with an RC1 of SP3 but
I'm having trouble with installing Nikon View s/w as well and haven't
resolved that one yet.

Not really sure this SP3 thing is worth it. <g>

Beta and RC software has it's risks. It's quite possible AIW function will
be broken under SP3 since all the AIW cards are an EOL product from ATI.You
may be stuck running SP2 for proper function. MS leaves it to vendors to
rewrite drivers for proper function with each release. For an EOL product,
that's not likely. It hasn't happened with Vista, and wont with SP3 either.

Yeah but luckily, AMCap works well so I don't have to mess with MMC
now. Never did really use it for encoding, I capture to avi and then
encode with Procoder but now I mainly just use the AIW portion to
watch TV at lunch out of the home office.

The WDM install was the problem that had me stymied. Turns out it has
to do with InstallShield. And I can't really complain about it being
EOL as I've had my 9600 for quite a while now (maybe 5 or 6 years?)
and the drivers are _still_ being updated.

SP3 has been a bit more quirky than I had expected but it's my OS of
choice for the next several years... at least. So I wanted to go
ahead and install it now since I was doing the annual format and
re-install anyway.

Based on a pretty extensive preview I gave it last year, I won't be
moving to Vista anytime soon. Too slow on my 2.8 box with a gig of RAM
and I don't need to upgrade h/w now. Looks pretty but not worth the
overhead, at least to me anyway. However, not surprisingly, I _was_
able to get AMCap working with the AIW under Vista. <g>
