XP SP2

My daughter downloaded SP2 last night on her HP computer.
This morning, when she restarted, the computer failed to
start. She says it briefly shows an HP logo, then the
Windows XP logo, then shuts off and starts over. Any ideas
about what to do? Thanks

F8 at/before startup screen, select "last know good config" option.
This doesn't work either. The only thing that works is a
message that the F10 key will go to system restore, and
she's worried that it will go back to as purchased, where
she would lose a lot of stuff.

Same thing/result. Last good config will be whenever it last stored
one, usually within the past 2 weeks if she didn't manually do one, if
its default settings are on, & unless SP2 created a fresh one(?).
<sigh>One's supposed to do a full backup & also establish a fresh
restore point B4 doing such a thing - usual warnings are repeated on
the SP2 site - what did one expect...? But it'll prob be fine. :)

Jim;
How to use the Automatic Recovery feature to recover your computer if the
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed successfully:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=875355

Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
If that fails, reboot tapping F8 again this time choosing Safe Mode.
Then System Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:

When you are ready for SP-2, follow the Service Pack Installation Checklist:
