No, I meant to disable All controllers to allow you to completely
purge your USB device category. But the more I think that idea
over it sounds less likely to work.

I had done tried that before coming here.

If this problem shows up on a
number of different OS'es then it must be a hardware issue with
the motherboard itself.

Exactly - I agree. YET it's that popup message that tells me that the hw
MUST recognize that it IS a USB 2.0 device.
Do you know if USB2.0 has ever worked
properly on the Asus board ?

Not sure - just got the camera.
Not sure what else to recommend.
You may have to just disable the on-board USB and get a PCI USB2
add-in card.

I have one - I removed it prior to all of this to get it down to just
the mobo usb ports.
PCI card I pulled had firewire and USB 2 ports. I got a deal on it at
CompUSA but hadn't used it .

Ok that's a wrap .
Thanks for the help - let's call it a night.

Not sure this has any connection to your problem but only on return
from sleep does that message appear for me. It is on a USB 2
connection and had no problems on setup and on regular boot, just
return from sleep. This is only one of the anomalies that happen with
sleep.

Oh sure , rub it in ...
Mine shows cold/warm/sleep /awake !

Calling it a night - thanks

I turned off in BIOS all onboard usb
Booted - unloaded all usb stuff, shutdown
rebooted
loaded sw for storebought USB 2/ firewire card - same thing - reboot -
same thing.
uninstalled all usb stuff - same thing

Just one more question, when you installed the PCI add-in USB
Firewire card did you have USB-2 capability then ? If so then the
conclusion would be the motherboard USB is defective. You did
say you have other OS'es installed/running and that USB-2 wasn't
working on any of them ?

XP General is a text only NG - Best to not post binaries or any
attachments here as you'll likely get numerous reprimands for it.
I'll review what you posted and see if I can make any headway
on what is going on.

USB 2 didn't work on the PCI card either so I just tried in another PC -
same thing.
SO 5 OS'es ... I went to Sony.com and found this under FAQ's:
===========
http://www.css.ap.sony.com/consumer/template/KBDetails.aspx
Applicable Models DSC-S500
Article ID: 55505 (modified: 8/4/2006 11:47:00 AM)
Does the camera support USB2.0?

Problem/Question:
The camera compatibility with Hi-Speed USB (USB2.0 compliant).

Solution/Answer:
No, it doesn't.
===========
Aisde from the broken English, so although the manual says it's usb2.0 and
the box says 2.0 , website FAQ from 8/06 says no ?? Maybe outdated FAQ ?

Back on original PC now and in rich text mode will attach the screenshot
from USB probe utility. You can see on "non-fast controller". The printout
really doesn't mean much to me since " Full mode" on a slow controller =
USB1.1 mode , how to see if device is REALLY 2.0 ?

Thanks

Been on the phone with 3 support folks from Sony. I was suspecting that I have a camera made back in August timeframe ( when FAQ shows non-usb2.0 compliant). They said it's always been 2.0 compliant. Last contact was enginerr there - I got him to get the same result as me . I showed them the url, asked for firmware update etc - they are calling Japan and will call/email me back .
On the asia website I found a few updates for firmware and USB driver - downloading now:

Hello there Bobb,

Have you managed to solve your problem ? , I have the same problem but with a flash drive, I think that it's software (WinXP) related. I have an ASUS P4PE mobo with latest BIOS running WinXP SP2 as well as an additional USB 2.0 PCI card none of the ports can be forced to run at USB 2.0 speeds. The odd thing is my wife has almost exactly the same setup ASUS P4PE mobo original BIOS revision 1002 and yet her computer will run the flash drive under USB 2.0 using standard WinXP SP2 drivers.

Thanks

Dave
