Hi,

I upgraded to XP SP2 on all the machines on my home
network, but now I can't control the ICS through the
client machines. I can still access the web if the host
is connected, but I have no control.

What do I need to do?

Thanks!

Run Help and Support and see the topic "To enable UPnP network
functionality".

you can also check your connection properties, ADVANCE tab,
and see if SHARE CONNECTION is enabled.

I'd like to do that, too, but I can't find it on Win XPHome.

Hmm, that topic is on my Win XP Home SP2 computer. Here's how I get
to it:

1. Click Start | Help and Support.
2. Type "UPnP" in the Search box.
3. Click the right arrow.
4. Click "Enable UPnP network functionality" under "Pick a task".

Another (longer) way to get to it is by clicking this sequence of
links:

Networking and the web
Networking
Internet connections
Discovery and Control
Using Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control
Enable UPnP network functionality

The first four links appear in the left pane, and the last two links
appear in the right pane.

It's a new feature in SP2, then, I suppose, because my XPHome SP1
machine gives no result for search.

This doesn't work, either. I've also found that there is a difference on
the Win 98 machine between what Help > Internet Connection Sharing tells
me the Internet Properties > Connections pane should look like 'LAN and
Internet Sharing') and what it actually looks like ('LAN Settings...').
Of course, I have no idea why that is so.

UPnP support isn't new in SP2. What's new is the Windows Firewall and
the Help topic that I pointed out.

I'm sorry, but I thought that you were the person who asked the
original question and said that he had upgraded all of his computers
to SP2.

If you'll post a new message with complete details of the problem that
you're trying to solve, I'm sure that someone can help.

See the thread 'Networking Win98 and XPHome'. But I now have an idea
what is wrong. The IE6 I have in my Win 98 machine is a several-stage
upgrade from an original IE3 or 4 supplied by my ISP, ***as a custom
variant*** (okayed by Microsoft, of course). I suspect it doesn't work
over a network: I know the original software didn't, 10 or so years ago.

If I were in USA, I could get IE6 on a CD, but for some curious reason,
it isn't available in Europe. And I can't get on to the Net to download
it on the Win 98 machine, of course. CRAZY!

Thanks! That solved it!!!
