xp sp2 - Status: Limited or no connectivity

J

Jeff Wells

After installing xp sp2, the status of the LAN connection reports - "Limited
or no connectivity". It appears that no non-routable ip has been assigned.
Removing sp2 fixes the problem. Reinstalling sp2, same problem.

For simplicity of debug, all hardware and software (routers, etc.) have been
removed. The situation is dsl modem (no built in router) connected directly
to computer by cat5/rj45.

"limited connectivity" describes the situation correctly. There is no
apparent problem with isp connection, but many other functions (voip, simple
ip-ip voice connection are two examples) are iffy... works for a time, but
the connection is lost.

Any help would be appreciated.

Similar problems have been reported and the solution (for those posters)
was that the dhcp service was turned off. Once turned on, everything
worked again. So check that out with services.msc. Also make sure your
lan isn't being firewalled.

I am having the same exact problem. I have removed all possible
variables(router, voip, switch, etc.) and nothing seems to work. The only
thing that works is uninstalling SP2. I am running on a Dell Dimension 2400.
Of course I tried calling Dell tech support(I fought my other personality
long and hard and he won) and they of course were clueless. They tried to
have me do all of their in-depth technical debugging tricks...Let see...
there was "let's scan for a virus"....then there was "let's check for
spyware"....then there was my favorite "jiggle the network cable a bit." I
had already tried absolutely everything before I called. My other
personality seemed to think that maybe, just maybe, I would get someone on
the phone that had a clue....about anything...let alone computers. He was
wrong...Now I am mucho frustrated and I have wasted an hour of my life that I
will never get back....

Can anyone think of anything to help me out here? =)

Gracias!

Sorry it has taken me this long to get back to you, and I'm even sorrier
that I don't have any answers. The only similar symptoms I've seen are
on a computer where the networking was iffy to begin with. I've long
suspected that I need to change out the nic in that box. It gets the
"limited or no connectivity" notice when it first starts up, but then
it connects and there is no problem for the rest of the time it's up.
Since this is one of my own boxen, I haven't bothered messing with it.
So possibly your nic was marginal and SP2 pushed it over the edge? I'm
just guessing here. Obviously there was a change in SP2 that didn't sit
well with your network. Do you both have Dells? (V)arshall, can you
stick in another standalone nic and see if your connection improves?

Here's a link, but I don't know if it will help. Maybe someone else
reading the group will have the answer for you (and me, too).

Same problem here.

SP2 killed the on-board LAN with my Asus A7V8X.

But if I install a PCI LAN card, it works just fine.

Going through a Netgear DG834 router/modem.

Did you get anywhere with this?

I think I have tracked it down to Windows, or something, allocating an
inappropriate IP address.

I connected both the on-board LAN and a PCI LAN. I'm no expert on
these things, but looking at the IP addresses, one looks right,
192.168.0.3 while the other looks wrong 169.254,231.70.

Maybe you could check your IP address.

Now I just have to work out how to change it, and go get that to
stick.

I'm running a Dell Dimension 2400 and use a wireless Dlink DWL-G510
adapter. After installing Windows XP SP2, internet connection showed
limited or no connection. All my other computers on network still
worked fine...no SP2 upgrade. Microsoft tech said it was my ISP's
problem...of course. I restored my system to pre-SP2 and everything
works fine now. To restore system settings click on start, all
programs, accessories, system tools, system restore. You can select
what date you want to restore system too. You will not loose any
documents or files created since then and you can undo the restore if
you need to.
