xp sp2 pc doesn't see CD drive any more???

Hello

I have seen this problem before and suspected a hardware problem. But I
re-installed Windows and then it could see the CD again.

I don't want to go through the hassle of re-installing Windows on this PC.
Any ideas on how to resolve the problem. PC is a Packard Bell laptop with
inbuilt CD.
