Shared CD drive access problem

I would like to access the CD drive on my own PC from my wife's PC
(which doesn't have a CD drive).

Both PCs run XP Pro.

I set my CD drive to shared and I can see it from my wife's PC, but when
I try and access it I get an access denied error.

I have no problems sharing and accessing my printer and selected folders.

The settings for the CD drive can be seen in the screenshot at

Intriguingly, a colleague who can access his shared CD drive OK sees a
different settings window - see

You are trying to share the contents of the Office 2003 CD.

Try removing it and then go through the process to share the drive

Thank you for your comment. The reason for trying to share the contents
of the Office 2003 CD is that I want to install Office 2003 on my wife's
PC, which doesn't have a CD drive.

Please note that I have purchased a separate Office 2003 CD for this
purpose, i.e. I'm not trying to install the software on more than one
computer.

I shared the CD drive before inserting the Office 2003 CD in the drive.

I have the same access problem with any other CD I insert into the
drive, i.e. I can see the drive from my wife's PC, but I can't access it.

Any further comments/suggestions?

To access proper settings you must turn off "simple file sharing".

I'm still not sure whether CD drive sharing is designed not to work with
'simple file sharing', or why it doesn't seem to work in my case.

I found relevant info at <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874> and
<http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm>.

I'll see how I get on and report back.
