hard drive access denied - HELP!

D

Dave

My motherboard was fried (long story), so I took the hard drive from
my pc and added it to another pc. Both a running Windows XP.

I am unable to boot directly to the old hard drive... nothing
happens. I've also tried to boot it using the Windows XP cd.

I can run the PC using the new hard drive, and I can locate the old
hard drive (and all the files). But when I try to access any of the
files (most programs, pictures, music, videos, etc...) I receive a
message that says the (insert file name) "... is not accessable.
Access is denied."

I've tried setting the files so that they can be shared, but it
doesn't help much.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot... I really know nothing about this. I
had help to get as far as I have, but my helper is also stumped.

I'm hoping that I'm just missing something simple.

Any ideas???

You need to disable Simple File Sharing and take ownership of
the files. Take a look at these articles for more info:

"Access is Denied" Error Message When You Try to Open a Folder

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

Good luck

You wont be able to boot from your old hd unless you do a repair
installation of win
If you want to access your old data you will have to take ownership of the
folder
Applications installed on your old hd will not run

This could help:

"How to Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP"

Note, that you must repeat the process for all the folders/files you want
access to.

It worked. Great! Thank you very much.

This is why I like message boards. After searching for hours on
microsoft sites, I got an accurate response from a helpful person.

Thanks again!
