XP SP2 oddity

Natsman

I have half a dozen machines running XP. They are all identical in
specification, and I have successfully installed SP 2 on five of them.

On attempting installation of the service pack on the sixth one however, the
installation bombed out at "setting a restore point", followed by an error
message to the effect that "Windows could not read or write to the
database", followed by "SP2 was not installed on your machine" (or words to
that effect).

I'm left with a stable pre-SP2 installation.

I can't find any reference to this problem anywhere - anyone any ideas,
please?

The quickest and most thorough way to solve this problem is a batch file, written

by fellow MVP Torgeir Bakken from Norway. Reboot the computer and, before

running any other program, run the batch file. It will tell you when it is finished.

Here it is: fixdb.bat

I downloaded and installed the batch file, and the SP2 installed perfectly afterwards.

Thanks, Carey
