XP SP2 new release date???

L

lisa_at_work

Hi y'all, I have a quick question which I am sure that all
of you experts will know the answer to:

I have heard twice now that the Windows XP SP2 will be re-
released at the end of September. It is to fix problems
with Dell hardware and Symantec anti virus...

Any truth to this vicious rumor? Or just another FUD
rumor? Thanks because we are testing it now to roll it out
starting Oct 1 and if we have to stop testing and try a
new version of the SP2 I will just have a big fat
tantrum...

The rumors you heard are absolutely false. SP2 was released in
its final form and no changes are planned. If future "hotfixes"
are required for Windows XP, they will be available at the
Windows Update website.

100% pure fiction.
SP-2 works fine with Norton all versions.
As for Dee hardware, I have not heard unusual comments about Dell
computers.

What is the source of this rumour?

Works fine with all my Dell PC's with NAV - don't know the source of your
"scuttlebutt", but evidently it's not entirely factual.

well then someone needs to call Dell because they are telling all their
customers this when you call for tech support on sp2!! like i did, and I
know others who got the same message

robin

the sorse of the rumor is Dell
call them and they will tell you there is a newer version coming out around
the end of sept
Maybe MS needs to contact dell?

i am running a dell deminsions 8200 and i had problems with the atapi and cd
rom
Again I called dell and they told me to uninstall sp2 and wait for a newer
version coming out in late Sept
If this is not true then someone needs to call Dell and find out what is
going on because I did exactly what dell told me to do and i am waiting to
see what develops

Robin;
If that is the issue I referred about Prescott, it is an Intel issue.
Intel needs to come up with the fix.
Dell will most likely get the fix from Intel the same as other
manufacturers.

Since you are a Dell owner, call Dell back.
If The tech states there is a new version of SP-2 coming out, ask the
tech for a reference.
Something as major at an updated version of SP-2 would have a website
reference.
If the tech can't or won't, IMMEDIATELY ask for a supervisor.
Either there is a reliable source or the tech is misinformed, lying or
just trying to get you off the phone to improve his own metrics.

Or perhaps Dell is coming out with a patch related to SP-2?

Robin,
remember you were the one saying SP2 broke hardware in your PC when in fact
it did not.
You also started the rumor about MS bringing out a new version of SP2 this
month.
Then you posted saying it was a faulty drive.................

N

Nero

Robin you said "i am running a dell deminsions 8200 and i had problems with
the atapi and cd
rom"
Then in another post you said that it turned out to be a faulty CD
drive..............
Make your mind up.
What was it?
SP2 "broke" it?
I think not

i had error msges in event viewer saying that the device\device\ide\ideport1
did not respond within the timeout period, after a reboot or startup of the
computer
I uninstalled sp2- error msgs went away
I also had problems with norton firewall 2003- it was locking up after a
reboot and sp2 security center was taking over by putting back sp firewall.
this problem I researched and found there is no patch for any of symantec
2003 products.
I felt I could live with this because i was manually going into the security
center and unchecking the firewall and then my firewall would come back to
life- I plan on getting the 2005 firewall when it comes out in Oct to fix
this issue.

I also found my computer slowed down to a crawl- when double clicking icons
it took up to 5minutes for any one in particular to open and when one
finally did open, i found that when i tried to do anything I would get the
"this program is not responding" and had to end task.- this problem i could
not figure out- was it the cd rom that was haning up at startup? or the
problem with norton?
again after uninstalling sp2 the icons now open very fast with no error msgs

Well after opening the computer we did some of our own testing and found
that the second cd rom drive was causing the error msges, did sp2 contribute
to this? well without sp2 i had no errors with- errors.
We then called dell and explained what happened. they sent us a new cdrw
drive which we installed. I do not know if I am going to get the error msg
again till i reinstall sp2. Yes sp2 could be more sensitive to problems and
that is why i was seeing the error msgs but after looking at all the
problems on many newsgroups, I found I am not the only one with problems.

When I had called dell they informed to to uninstall sp2. I had talked to a
level 2 person not the level 1 person and he told me there was going to be a
revision or update to sp2 at the end of sept. I asked him if he was sure
and where he got this info and he said he got it from Microsoft. Well this
is dell i was calling so why not believe him? Funny though, a client of
mine had called Dell for a problem with lost icons after installing sp2 a
day after I talked to them and Dell told him the same thing. Now this is 2
days later, a different tech person, and a different problem.

Well, i am still going to wait till Oct, first to fix the norton issue, 2nd
to see if anything develops with changes, just in cast they are actually
telling the truth.

interesting though, if you go to this site
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/winxpsp2install.htm
he says: (look at the last sentence- maybe he knows something we do not
know?)

Based on our experience with Service Pack 2 beta and final SP2 release, can
tell you that it is not a "must have right away" update. As long as you are
current on critical Windows Updates, not using Internet Explorer as your
main Internet browser (alternatives are Mozilla, Firefox and Opera) and
have/update antivirus and firewall, there should be no rush. Just like with
any other major update, it's always a good idea to give Microsoft a chance
to remove most of the bugs.

Star Fleet Admiral Q

Opinions Opinions, everyone has opinions. I bet there's more successful
installs than unsuccessful, because people mostly post when they have
problems, no success.
Oh by the way, I have 3 Dells, all running XP Pro w/SP2 and NAV, no
problemo.

N

Nero

Stopping the windows firewall from "re setting" is easy, just disable it in
services and no more problems.

well if MS is not coming out with a sp2a t for XP, hen how come 4 tech
friends of mine who are microsoft beta testers just received a sp2a to test?

If there were a SP2a beta testing program, Microsoft MVPs
would be among the first to know about it. Your "tech friends"
are simply pulling your leg!
