XP SP2 is still optional after 4/12/2005, right?

You need to have those *services* on (though BITS can be manual) and
have actual Auto Updating off in its own Control Panel Applet. You
can then go to Windows Update (eg in the Tools menu of IE) and check on
updates manually (Custom Install), and be selective. As yet the only
ones I have seen offered there with SP2 installed are the .Net Framework
one and the link to check on any needed updates for Office

Hi,

Alex, I know these services have to be on, and that is my point and beef. Those services didn't have to be on in V4, since I had the option then to scan for updates. Now, to do this (through custom install), I have to have these services on (even if manual), which I feel shouldn't have to be on. If I tell it to scan, I am allowing MS to look at my system needs anyway, and I don't want them telling my paid for OS to be run by them. I like using my resources how I feel I need them, and not how they want it to be.

As an aside, I would never let MS choose my updates anyway, I always select what I think I need, unless it is a critical, or security update.

Again - feel free to correct me if I am wrong - but if that is true, why is
it that I have always had AU turned off and to this day (XPSP2) am still
able to manually update any Windows update?

Try turning AU off ( set to "disable" in the "Startup type" drop down box) in services.msc, and you won't get it.

That wasn't the point however. I have used Security Centre to turn off auto
updates because I prefer to go download them myself when ready to do that
and have them install. I can still do this.

Besides, what you said is wrong anyway. If I did as you said I could still
go to the downloads pages at MS and download them onto my desktop and double
click on them to install them. I know that isn't automatically updating but
neither is my way and all ways still update.

Nice back pedal! You specifically stated "Yes, you can set AU to off in the Control Panel/Automatic Updates and still use Windows Updates to do manual updates."

Key part is "still use Windows Updates". I told you how it wouldn't work, so your searching for downloads and saving them isn't close to what you implied originally.

Do you even understand what you just said there? You accused me of
backpedalling and then said I said exactly as I said above that. How the
hell is that backpedalling?

You are A) Wrong and B) wrong. If you bothered to read what I said you would
see why. I quote it back for you to read. You CAN get updates at Windows
update with AU off. I got the latest one a couple of days ago when I
bothered to check and it downloaded and installed in the manner it always
has.

Suggest that before you start saying something doesn't work, try proving it
doesn't.
