XP SP2 Intel 82815 VGA Problem & Fix

Compaq DeskPro P3 733 (latest BIOS from Compaq - 686P2 v3.14, 9/13/2002)
Onboard Intel 82815 VGA controller
ProView 758 17" LCD monitor

When running SP1 the VGA card is recognized as having 4MB Memory size and I
quite happily ran at 1280x1024 @ 75Hz with 24 bit color.

After installing SP2 the VGA card is recognized as having 32MB Memory size.
1280x1024 is no longer an option, the maximum is 1280x960 and at this res I
can only run at 60Hz which looks terrible. If I push it to 75Hz I get a VGA
signal out of range from the LCD monitor.

I tried re-installing the VGA drivers from both Intel and Compaq's site with
no change. Uninstalling SP2 reverses the poor graphics behaviour and I can
once again run at 1280x1024 @ 75Hz with 24 bit color, re-install SP2 and
its broken.

The driver version before SP2 was 5.13.01.2753.1
The driver version after SP2 is 6.13.01.3198

So, after reinstalling SP2, I went into the driver properties for the VGA
card and rolled the driver back to the previous version (I am back using
5.13.01.2753.1) and its working perfectly.

Actually, SP2 has no drivers in it so it would seem that you downloaded
and installed drivers from Windows Update. As you have discovered, this
is always a Bad Idea. You should install critical security patches from
Windows Update and either leave your drivers alone or get updates from
the device mftr.'s website.

Um, wrong.

I did not use Windows Update, I downloaded the the full version of the XP
SP2 and installed that.

Download
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Extract it.

Then extract sp2.cab.

There are a ton of driver files in there, including i81xnt5.sys which is
version 6.13.1.3198

Really? It didn't change any of the driver files on the four computers
on which I've already installed it. I guess you were just "lucky". Glad
you got it sorted.
