XP SP2 broke FTP in IE !?!?!?

S

SeanShannon

I've installed XP SP2 on a few machines in the office (including mine)
and each one is now no longer able to access our FTP site (hosted at
isp) using Internet Explorer. If I install CuteFTP on the machine I
can connect just fine using the same account credentials. I've
searched google looking for anything regarding xp sp2 doing this but
haven't found anything. Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Sean

Perhaps the troubleshooting information in this article may help:

You may not be able to open a project when you try to connect to a remote Windows XP
Service Pack 2-based computer by using the AutoCAD FTP service
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;873185&Product=windowsxpsp2

Here's how to correct the problem after opening Port 21 via the
SP2 firewall Exceptions tab:

1. Open Internet Explorer >Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab

2. Uncheck the box: "Use passive FTP (for firewall & DSL modem capability)

Hi Sean,

If you have problems connectiong to FTP servers using Internet Explorer when
your computer is behind a firewall, you need to enable passive mode so you
can connect a different way.

If this is the case: In IE go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and scroll
down to Use Passive FTP, select and apply.
