installing a 16-bit program under XP Pro SP2 or SP3

Hi all,

I just recently did a fresh install of XP Pro SP2, and updated to SP3, 1G
RAM, 2.8ghz cpu

I had an old 16 bit program, a network calendar/planner program for years
and it worked just fine.
Since installing I can no longer install it on the SP2 or SP3 machines.. ??
It is still running on 3 other units and has been for years...

Anything in the SP2 or SP3 updates that would prevent installing this old
program??

I have written the manufacturer, but haven't heard back in over a week...
:(

Any thoughts??

thanks,

I guess the question was, is there any reason anyone knows of that an old
16bit program would not run under an SP2 or SP3 version of XP Pro.

However, here are the details:

I double click the setup.exe file, the hour glass flips a few time, then
disappears. No error messages, nada!

When I look in the Task Manager under the Processes Tab, it shows two files
indented in from the rest of the entries.. wowexec.exe and setup.exe, under
the column labeled "Mem Usage" it shows blank, no numbers at all.

when I right click the setup.exe entry and choose "End Process", I get a
Task Manager Warning - "WARNING: Terminating a process can cause undesired
results including loss of data and system nstability. The process will not
be given the chance to save its state or data before it is terminated. Are
you sure you want to terminat the process?" I choose YES.

the entry flickers but does nothing, still shows.

I right click wowexec.exe and choose "End Process", I get the same warning,
the a little later I get a System Error window that says: "The request to
end the selected 16 bit task has timed out. The Win 16 Subsystem may be
unstable. Press OK to terminate the Win 16 Subsytem or Cancel to leave it
running." I click OK. and both entries disappear from the Task Manager.

I close the Task Manager.

I have tried to install this program on 3 different machines, but all have
XP Pro SP2 on them and this one has SP3. The same symptoms are exhibited on
each machine.

HTH,

This is exactly the same as a problem I have just fallen over. I have had
sidekick2 on my computers for years but recently it is refusing to open, it
just freezes and has to be closed with control alt delete etc. I get the same
error messages as you. I have tried to reinstall but get all the same errors
that you flag up.
I hope someone can fix this for us as I have lost an address list
accumulated over 10 years.
I am wondering if a recent automatic update to XP has caused this.

I would post the question in a Sidekick newsgroup and/or check the Sidekick
FAQs. Do you have a recent backup of your important files?

I have tried to re install from the original floppy and also from a new
download of the programme files to no succes.
I have saved the files as the skw files and as dbf files but I haven't got
anything on my current PC to open these with. If Sidekick continues to fail I
will have to work on these files through another programme.
Where would I find a Sidekick newsgroup?
