XP SP2 and SFC

Q

Quaoar

Running sfc /scannow under XP SP2 results in sfc complaining that it
needs the XP Home SP2 installation CD to proceed.

SP2 installs C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 as well as the registry
key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ServicePackSourcePath
with key value C:\Windows\ServicPackFiles which contains the folder i386
which should provide the needed SP2 source files.

Any ideas on how to correct SFC's problem with finding its own source?

Hi Quaoar - Take a look at these and check all of the various Registry
locations mentioned there for correct addresses. Likely something's been
stored incorrectly:

scannow sfc (sfc.exe)
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Windows File Protection
http://www.updatexp.com/windows-file-protection.html

(My experience is that most of the time you also need to set

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath)

The servicepackfiles folder does not include *every* file on the system.
Quite a few have never been updated. So you need to start with your
original CD in the drive, exit autorun, then run SFC - that may avoid it
getting in conflict over Home or Pro CDs
