XP Sp2 after install pc stutters

Andy

I have reinstalled XP Home 3-4 times now and every time
it completes including sp2 the computer stutters. I can
be doing anything on the pc and it will freeze for 1 -2
seconds and then continue. For instance i could be moving
the mouse around the screen mouse pointer stops and
continues 1-2 seconds later if music is playing the last
note continues to play over the 1 to 2 secs but like
stutters.

anybody have any ideas please

From the software side, make sure you have the latest drivers for all
your hardware. Look in Event Viewer for clues (Control Panel
Administrative Tools applet).

From the hardware side, check to see if your computer is overheating.
Since you haven't given us any information about your computer, it's
impossible to be more specific. If you'd like more help, repost to this
thread with details about your hardware, the age of the computer, if
you are installing clean (formatting the drive first), and if this
computer ever had XP installed successfully on it. If it did, what
changed?

Hi Andy,

My computer is doing the exact same thing. The strange part is this: When
I uninstalled the Service Pack it still did the exact same thing. I used to
record music with my PC and now because of this problem I can't do anything.
My computer is about a year old. I have an Athlon XP 2500 CPU, 1 Gig of RAM,
a 256 MB graphics card, etc. There's no reason that this should be
happening. I've had XP installed on this machine for a year now and it was
perfect until recently. Let me know what you find out. You can e-mail
directly at (e-mail address removed). Thanks! David

Hi Malke,

I just wrote a reply to Andy but thought I'd let you know as well...I am
having the exact same problem that Andy wrote about. It just happened
recently (after installing Service Pack 2). My mouse is erratic, sound is
choppy, and the computer seems to freeze for just a split second ever so
often. I have an Athlon XP 2500 CPU, 1 Gig of RAM, 256 Megs of RAM on my
video card and am running XP Pro. It's the strangest thing....

Hi, David. You should start a new thread for your problem instead of
hijacking Andy's, even if you think the subject is the same. That way
each person gets help. Andy did not mention anything about his
computer, so it's impossible to know what the issue is there.
Troubleshooting points:

1. Is the machine OEM (HP, Sony, Dell, etc.)? If so, did you first go to
the mftr.'s website to see if there are any patches that need to be
applied before putting on SP2?

2. Was the machine 100% virus and spyware-free? We can't tell from
Andy's post whether he was doing Repair Installs or Clean Installs.

3. Did you check for updated hardware drivers?

4. Are there programs running that need to be patched? Any programs that
are known to be incompatible (Alcohol, other virtual drive software)?
