Can't find a link to where you can order a service pack 1
cd on the UK website. Used to be there - now I can only
link to the US site re the SP1a pack. US site says its
only for US/Canada. Anyone know where the UK link has
gone?? ;-)

You do realise that SP1 and SP1(a) are the same thing - it's just the latter
doesn't contain Java due to MS's on-going litgation with Sun Microsystems.
You're right, the international link isn't working. However, if you would
care to contact me magrat (underscore) garlick (at) hotmail (dot) com, I
will burn it to a CD for you, along with the SP 1 roll-up which has just
become available.

Hi

The link on the MS UK web site is removed
(http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsxp/servicepacks/sp1.asp), but it is still
listed here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-gb;winxpfaq&product=winxp

That page also states that you can call 0870 6010100 (MS Technical Support in
UK) to place an order of the CD.

Thanks - I did know about SP1/1a being the same. Just want
to tap into the UK market for this patch on eBay. You see
not everyone knows they can get the CD free from Msoft. ;-)

(But until I find the link, I can't get any more!)

Well congratulations on admitting your intentions on an MS hosted
newsgroup - If something is offered for free, then you are in violation of
the copyright by offering it for sale - you're essentially profiting from
someone else's work which is a criminal offence. You are also in violation
of your agreement with eBay and/or PayPal, and I really don't know how you
can live with your conscience - does it make you feel good ripping people
off?! That's s stupid question - it must do, or you wouldn't do it!

I have forwarded a copy of this to Microsoft and eBay. Hopefully you'll get
what's yours....

Torgeir - thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the link
from your link gives a 404:

"Sorry, there is no microsoft.com/uk/ web page matching
your request.
It's possible you typed the address incorrectly, or that
the page no longer exists."

Unless it reappears, I'll have to use the phone number you
gave. Many thanks again for your interest!

IMO, he isn't selling the software, he is selling (if anything is
being sold), the service of provideing the already free software on a
CDR. If anything, the most you could get him for is violation of
software exportation laws/agreements, since it is clear it would be
going to the UK.

Sounds to me like he wants to sell the location of the link, for which he
should be ashamed of himself :) There's lots of things like this on eBay
where people are trying to sell information which is freely available. They
should all be ashamed of themselves, but no more so that the idiots who
buy.... They should be ashamed of themselves for being so gullible.

Certainly, there's no way can be sell a disc with the service pack on. That
definately breaches any number of redistrubution conditions, not to mention
potential copyright laws...

I have asked MS UK, but they have yet to come back to me. I suggest
phoning them at 0870 60 10 100

Yes, that is shameful behavior, but the case seems to mee
he is distributing a CD with freely downloadable content, and at that
no mention of sale, let alone sale of the software.

If the license for the software dictates open distribution, or he has
agreed with the software copyright holder to do so, he can.

Gary,

I think the line "you see not everyone knows they can get the CD free from
Microsoft" sums up his intentions. He wants to order as many copies of the
SP1 CD as possible and then flog them - they're going for as much as £5.99
http://tinyurl.com/uipi. If he can manage to pull off the same stunt, he's
on to a nice little earner...
