XP Sound, Speakers revert to stereo?

Hi,

I have XP home on an ASUS MB with a Sounblaster live 5.1 audio card. I
notice that if I go into the sound configuration with via XP control panel
or Soundblaster audio HQ and set the speakers to 5.1 they will at some point
revert back to "stereo".

I have no idea what is doing this, any ideas?

It seems like a pretty common problem as I have a similar one. Nobody seems
to have a clue on this or they ain't in the mood to talk.
