This laptop takes forever to bootup.
Is there anything I can do to speed up the bootup process?

1. Make sure the computer is virus/malware-free:

2. Don't have unnecessary programs starting with Windows. Always go to
the program's Options first to set this preference. If the program
doesn't give you that option, use the System Configuration Utility:

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab
and find the programs you don't want to start with Windows. Uncheck the
box next to its name, Apply and OK out. You don't need to restart
immediately, but the next time you do you'll get a dialog saying you've
used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother
me about this again".

Look up items you find on the Startup tab by either Googling their names
or here are some sites with lists:

If you need more help after you've done the above troubleshooting, see
this link for the kind of detail you should include in your next post:

Hi,

Eliminate what is not essential from loading at boot. Click start/run, or
hit winkey+r, and type MSCONFIG and click ok. Go to the startup tab, uncheck
items that are not essential to start up. Unchecking them does not disable
or remove them, it merely keeps them from starting loading into memory at
boot.

Rather than installing a third-party program of unknown provenance, the
OP should troubleshoot the startup issue.

1. Make sure the computer is virus/malware-free:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

2. If the machine is clean, then do clean-boot troubleshooting to
determine what is starting with Windows:

Clean-boot advanced troubleshooting in Windows XP -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434

and How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP -

Here are some places to look up the items found starting with Windows:

http://aumha.org/a/loads.htm - What loads at Startup?
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/search.php

If doing all this isn't the OP's cup of tea, s/he should take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not a local version of
BigStoreUSA).

I concur ... most problems are do to processes auto started at startup ...
e.g., McAfee VirusScan (ActiveShield) is a huge hog.
When I played around with my Run apps, and turned it off, my system came up
immediately (within 2 seconds).

It can also be due to support drivers (since you're a labtop), where the
hardware is not hooked up. It takes a while for Windows XP to determine
that the hardware is not there and to go on to complete startup.

Larry:

Hi....I'm having the same problem. Please tell me exactly where to go and
what you did. Thanks.
