Hi all, my system shuts down as if the plug has been pulled. On starting no
fault / error code shows and it boots up as normal. It is ok when general
email / web use but seems to crash when say converting avi files to disk
image or running microsoft malicious software tool. I have tested memory and
says ok. Virus software says all ok. Chkdsk ran but I did not see the
results but went for auto fix option so assume should have completed ok. Any
ideas please?

Many things can cause this such as:
Static damage.
Dust(heat buildup)
heatsink not sitting/locked properly on cpu
Bad power supply.
power going into power supply is bad? (test with a ups)
Also you can have a bad ups? If the UPS is over 2 years old then it time to
change it.
Also video card memory chips overheating?(my ati did this to me.)

Computer virus? scan your pc and make sure the dat file/virus updates have
been applied.
run chkdsk.

Oh I don't know if I agree with that. An UPS surely can last far longer
than 2 years. And I have had lead-acid batteries (what is commonly used
in UPS) last tops, for 10 years. One recommendation which I liked was to
test time once every 3 months. Meaning to pull the plug and let run for
a few minutes. Supposedly this cleans the plates. Although I also like
to check the capacity at this time as well. Thus you know where the
current state of the battery is at.

Which seems to be a dead link now, but archive.org still has a copy of
it.

I use an older PowerWare UPS. I change the battery about every 2-3
years for around ~$24 US. The batteries are fairly easy to locate. I've
even seen them on the shelf at Home Depot. One convenient place to
get replacements is Batteries +. http://www.batteriesplus.com/

Thanks for the reply. Don't think power is a problem but even then you would
expect a " system shut down incorrectly" type message when restarted -
wouldn't you?
I have run chkdsk and virus checker which is updated daily by my ISP. As I
say crashes when running microsoft malicious software removal tool after
about 15 mins in. Regards John

Yes I agree, it probably isn't a power problem. Your event log might
tell you if it is software related though.

How old is your UPS itself?

8.5 Years old - PowerWare 3115 and works fine. About the only thing
that might motivate me to a newer model is the old "Serial" bus interface
to the PC for monitoring/control.

Oh that sounds great! And I don't know how important having it connected
by the serial port anyway. My Powmax is only 1 year old and it has a
serial connector. It is connected to my desktop, which I only use to
make backups from my laptop. And my laptop doesn't have a serial port.
And those USB to serial adapters don't work for UPS. So my laptop can't
shutdown anyway if the UPS battery gets low. I guess I just have to do
it manually, which is okay by me.

Thanks for that. Checked error log but nothing for dates I know it crashed
out - unless there is another log? Also do you know where to find the chkdsk
log? Thought that might help eliminate causes? Thanks - John
