XP services required to run Briefcase?

I'm running an XP laptop for audio with all unnecessary services
stopped, but I just tried putting a folder in a briefcase and it won't
work properly... so I wonder if there's a specific service I need
running to make this work?

I create the briefcase on the desktop & drag the folder in. Once
there it shows inside the case, but hovering over it says "folder is
empty" and inside it the status bar says 0 objects, with none showing.
But when I try to drag the files into the folder (in the case) I get
"Sync copies cannot be created because the folder itself already has
or is a sync copy." When I click Update All is says all the files are
up to date.
