XP SERVICE PACK 3 on CD?

K

Kansenji

Does anyone know when/if/where a CD will be obtainable of XP Service Pack 3?

When SP2 was about to become available, Microsoft was taking pre-orders for
it to be posted on CD FREE of charge; I can't find any such offer on MS web
pages as of yet.

When the SP3 CD becomes available, you will have to pay for shipping and
handling. So it won't be free.

When it's finally released, yes, you can order it, pay $10+ orr whatever it
is for shipping (shipping isn't free), and wait the week or three for it to
arrive.

Or, you can download the entire install, burn it to CD or DVD, and have it
within an hour or so for under a dollar. If you don't have a highspeed
connection yourself, it shouldn't be hard to find a friend or internet cafe
who can do this for you, still costing less than shipping from MS.

Ultimately, you're going to want to slipstream SP3 to your original XP CD
(as long as you don't have an OEM CD with other updates applied), so getting
the official CD isn't a huge advantage.

Why do you feel an OEM cd will not slipstream? I have done that.

I have too, but with some, notably ones from Dell, slipstreaming fails with
a message that other updates have been applied.

It depends on the OEM and the way they configured the install CD.

I see that there is apparently a method for forcing a slipstream on these
discs, but I don't think I'd recommend it to novices.

It's an accurate statement. You had to, and still have to, pay shipping
costs.

Yes, the CD itself is "free". But shipping the CD isn't, as you can see
here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

"Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD
Thank you for your interest in the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD. This CD
includes the same Service Pack 2 software that is available for download
from Microsoft Update.

Note: A shipping and handling charge will be assessed on your order."

However, the page also includes this note:

"Share This CD with a Friend
After you have installed Service Pack 2, Microsoft encourages you to give
this CD to a friend or family member using Windows XP."

And they offer 4-6 week service. I would suggest that downloading the file
and burning it to CD is a much better deal.

No you did not always have to pay for the shipping. I ordered one in the
fall of the year it came out and it was delivered by mail without charge.
At some later date they discontinued free shipping.

Is it?

No you didn't.

When SP2 was released it was shipped free of charge. No charge for the CD.
No charge for the shipping. (that's what I meant by free of charge) Still
have mine.

Now 4 years later they are charging for shipping.

I was asking for a cite regarding your claim on the way SP3 would be
handled. The link you provided is for SP2.

So you're guessing about SP3.

FWIW I've slipstreamed SP2 with several of my OEM Dell XP CDs using
Autostreamer.

There is no link because there has been no announcement of the release to
manufacturing of SP3. While the online press is reporting that this will
happen Monday, it has not happened yet. If you feel the need to be
combative in spite of the good faith attempts of other users here to provide
you an answer to your question then just wait for MS to make their official
announcement.

Just don't do it with an XP Gold cd. MS has repeatedly warned the beta
testers in the SP3 TechBeta program that it will not result in a correct
upgrade and that only slipstreaming SP3 with an XP cd at service pack 1 or
later will result in a correct upgrade to SP3. This is the reason upgrading
from XP Gold to SP3 directly using the Windows Update experience is blocked.

I was attempting to find out if the poster had an actual source for his/her
information or if they were making a guess.

If correcting an incorrect statement of fact and dispelling a rumor is
combative in your mind, I stand guilty as charged.

Thanks for your input.

Doug,

You are missing the point. the guy was simply saying that IF YOU HAVE
SLIPSTREAMED HOTFIXES ON DELL'S OEM OS then it won't do what you want to
do i.e. slipstream SP3. This has always been the case with all CDs.

I too have slipstreamed SP1 and SP2 but without any hotfixes which you
get every month.

I hope this helps to clarify what the guy was saying.

Incorrect. You will be able to slipstream SP3 on GOLD CD but you won't
be able to install SP3 on a system which has GOLD CD installed without
any service packs and hotfixes. I.E. if you do a clean install of your
system using gold cd then you won't be able to install SP3 unless you
also install SP1 or SP2 first.

Yes, it depends on whether or not Dell added *other* components. If you
were able to do this, good for you. It's failed every time for me. It's
hard to tell whether it will work or not until you actually try it.
