xp service pack 1a disconnects

Installed sp 1a for xp twice. Each time modem connection
speed changed to 115. Internet connection is lost after
short time or almost immediately. Un-installed sp 1a and
the connection speed returns to between 40 - 50. How can
I install xp sp 1a and stay connected?
