service pack 1a problems

SP 1a disables my mouse. Uninstalling it (have to
keystroke as the mouse does not work) gets me back to XP
Pro and a working mouse, but I think SP 1a should work.
This is on a new Dell desktop. (SP 1 download also brought
a child's new-ish laptop to its knees and had to be
uninstalled, so I am concerned about these service packs
and xp.)

Worse, now that I am back in XP Pro with no SP, I get
occasional WFP error messages, and worse yet, when I try
to do a restore, I get the rsi entry point error message!

Help! What do you experts do when an XP SP download messes
things up?

If you're getting wfp errors, you may have some missing files.
Open a CMD box and issue SFC /SCANNOW
This command will check all the protected files and restore
any that are bad/missing.

If system restore still doesn't work completely disable it,
(from the system restore tab of "system properties")
reboot, reenable, and reboot again.
You may want to access it a third time to set/review the
amount of disk space used by system restore.

Install SP1a.. if mouse is nt working enter the device manager,
look for any unusual status. Also peruse the event viewer logs
for any associated errors or information.
Event viewer can be accessed by typing eventvwr.msc from the
RUN box.
Rather than uninstalling SP1a, much better to uninstall the mouse,
USB support (if it's a USB mouse - you didn't say) reboot and allow
the system to reinstall.
