xp repait install breaks USB network adaptor

My system crashed and I did a repair install. I had to reinstall some USB
drivers, but I can not reinstall the USBLan network driver for my Motorola
cell
phone. It says problem installing device. Is there a log file with more info?

II can not uninstall the problem device so the Motorola tools can reinstall.
I found the note about showing the phantom devices in the hardware manager.
When I try to uninstall the network device it says "Failed to uninstall
device. The device may be required to boot"

The Motorola device "clean up, uninstall, install"l utility fails at the
uninstall step too.

I "fixed" the problem by making the driver unsigned when I removed all of
the wdm lines from the inf file. Why the error message didn't mention
"signing" and why this cropped up after a repair install are mysteries.
