XP ReInstall to REPAIR -or- FRESH Install

Wayne

XP Hm crashed. For instance, START/Task bar came up purple/bluish in
color!

W/XP disk in hand, have a decision: Execute a REPAIR -or- FRESH/NEW copy.
(I did a REPAIR in early May 06. All went fine.)

What does a FRESH/NEW copy do (that a REPAIR does not do)? Will existing
files, settings be effected? And ONLY a NEW copy of Windows is installed?
Or are other things/settings effected?

Thanks!

Hi

If you perform a 'Clean' install of then everything be lost - including all.
If you wish to that it's a good idea to backup the files you will want at a
later time. Have a look at the following article by Michael Stevens:

"Clean Install Windows XP "

A clean install will wipe everything on the drive, so backup any important
documents. You will also have to re-install any software that was not
installed when you purchased the pc.

A repair install simply re-installs the operating system files and doesn't
touch any other software or files you have on your pc - however it is still
adbvisable to backup and important files.

A clean install clears out all the rubbish off your hard drive and allows
you to start from scratch. I much prefer clean installs to repairs, although
i now use an image of my original clean install which makes the process a
lot quicker. As soon as i have re-imaged the drive (using acronis) i log on
to the web, update my anti virus and then update windows. After updating i
then image the drive again so the new image contains the latest updates.
