If I do a clean reinstall of Win XP Home on to the C partition of my hard
disk - and leave all my programs and data on the other drives and partitions
will the new installaition pick up the programs that are there?

Yes you will. Windows XP doesnt just see the programs. you will still have
to reinstall all of them.

Hi!
you have to re-install the programs.

No. Installed programs have many references to where they are
are--in the registry and elsewhere. A clean reinstallation may
keep programs on another drive but loses all those references.
They will not work.

Unless they are elderly. entirely self-contained programs then the
answer is no. Almost any program makes entries in the registry in order
to work, and many put files of their own in the windows folder or places
like Program Files\Common Files. So you have to reinstall them -
putting them in the same folder that they were before.

It may help to use regedit.exe to export their
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\them and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Them
folders first and re-import them after the new setup has restored any
files so as to get settings back.
