I recently had to reinstall my win XP OS.

Now I am trying to update the windows software. If I try from ie it
freezes, if I try from the the help and support window, it says I do not have
an open internet connection. However, I am on cable with no router and have
no other connection or email issues.

Should I run the connection wizard? I am afraid that doing that will just
screw up one of the few things that doesn't have problems.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Once xp is installed it will need drivers,to get xp started, install the
chipset
software for the board,video drivers,internet hardware software/drivers,etc.
Usually the board or pc comes with a cd with all this....

dont try and ad a new connection, try this: in control panel, security
centre, update options> select notify me of new updates but dont
install them.. reboot the pc and you should get a icon in the task bar
saying new updates available click here to install, this is also the
only way to actually choose what updates you want or dont want (beware
of genuine).

Flamer.

What issues did you think reinstalling Windows would resolve? Did you
format and reinstall or just do a Repair Install?

I had no problems after the reinstall with anything other than the refusal of
XP to do the update.......

I had a strange problem in ie with some of the accounts not being able to
recognize .asp pull down menu's, not being able to download files through
outlook web access (OWA) and some other issues. I tried a repair install of
ie and that did not work. So then I did a full install, but I did not
reformat the drive first. It resolved my original issues, but now I have the
new issue regarding the updates.

Are you (now) running WinXP, WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2, Barry?

Was any Norton software installed prior to the Repair Install? Is any
installed now?

I am running WinXP SP2. I had McAfee installed but disabled prior to the
repair install and it is still installed. I also noticed that some
functions, like a streaming video, does not work. The error mesage indicated
that IE did not recognize that I was connected to the internet. It seems
strange that I can connect to the internet, but that some functions do not
recognize that.

Barring finding anything by running a thorough check for hijackware
(including posting your HijackThis log to an appropriate forum), I suggest
that you seriously consider formatting & reinstalling Windows, Barry.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
