XP registration ??

Hi
A little advice please.
I'm a Windows 95 user but have just set up a *new*computer for a friend,have
activated XP
by entering the product key, downloaded most of the critical updates(did not
download four newest ones released a few days back,as read on these groups
that some caused problems,ie
would not install properly, and as not my computer did not want to mess
things up for her).

However my question is,do I have to register her XP,I think I recall on
starting up first time a
registation box popping up but at the time had no internet dial-up working.

I am asking this because I read in a magazine something about 30 days to
reg///activate XP
from new.anyone clarify please.

Registration is always optional(and not needed).
Acitvation is required(and xp locks you out after 30 days if not activated).
To check if your activated:
Choose run from the start menu and type in this command
c:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
Hit ok.

Once you run that line it opens the windows xp activation wizard. If its
activated it will tell you so and you can exit, if its not activated it will
walk you thru getting activated.

"...have activated XP..."
Do you recall typing the above? You will know whether
Activation is still required, as the reminder bubble will appear with each
logon.

Once again many thanks.
Have been in contact with friend and given her the command to run,she will
phone back.
She thinks she may have done it herself as bubble was on countdown since I
last saw her.
Thinks she had to connect to net to do so,if not thanks to you now know what
to do.
many thanks for your time.

An XP System must be *activated* - not registered - within 30 days of
installation if it is to remain usable. You do this by getting on the
net, then going to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and using 'Activate on the internet. You can also do it by a phone in
option there if you do not have an internet connection.

If before the 30 days there is a reformat and new install, there is a
new 30 day period starts - if the system is too messed up, that might be
a worth while course
