I'm just trying to make sure that we're all talking about the same CD. I
have the upgrade from 98SE. Can I do a complete disk reformat and reinstall
XP?
I just don't want to blow it. Thanks

Hi,

The retail upgrade version of Win98SE *will* satisfy the compliancy
test and allow WinXP to be installed, clean. You should also make sure
you have the Win98 product key saved before removing Win98 from the
drive.

Hi, are there different versions of the upgrade XP CD then? I've done
several clean installations and it has never asked me for a previous version
of windows......

A retail Upgrade XP CD marked on the box 'For machines with Windows 98.
.. . ' will do a clean install provided you have a retail CD of the
qualifying product - eg a 98SE one. That may itself be an Upgrade CD,
but a maker's restore or recovery one will not do. Check it for a Win98
folder of .cab files - that is what is needed.

Then reinstall of the system after booting the XP CD direct. Enter
Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install. When it asks
you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the current partition
and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage

A little way down it will ask where Windows is - Put the 98 CD in the
drive and point the request to it. In a moment there will be a blue
screen asking for a CD: put the XP one back and carry on
