my XP machine crashed, and XP won't start. I don't have
the recovery CD. I put the harddrive into a win98 machine
and using the Win98 WinExplorer I can see the XP drive. I
can't see the original data. All I can see is a recovery
partition that has alot of recovery directories/file like
sys Vol Info, Preload, Tools, etc. nothing obvious about
how to fix or restore the drive. anyone know what I can
do here?

Hi,

You can't read the main partition from Win98 as it is probably using NTFS.
Even if you could, what were you hoping to do?

What happens - precisely - when you try to start WinXP? Error messages
(including the one that crashed the machine) are crucial to understanding
how to fix this.

when I try to start XP, i get a message that HAL.DLL is
missing or corrupt. i have the file HAL from another
machine. problem is that i don't know how to access the
XP harddrive to load the new file.
What I want to do is have XP as the OS, and have two
harddrives in the machine.

thanks,
