I don't get the option to disconnect safely. As soon as I plug the usb drive
in, the system reboots. I have run a virus scan on the PC and on the drive
(on another PC), using several different products (symantec, avg, trendmicro)
with no viruses found. I plugged a different usb drive into the PC and it
did the same thing. I have updated the BIOS. I have updated the usb
drivers. The drive works fine in other PCs. I have plugged another usb
device in the pc (a usb mouse) and it just recognized the device with no
problem.
Does the PC reboot once and come back to a desktop, or does it go into a
continuous loop of rebooting?

I think I have solved the problem... I ran an earlier restore point to a date
prior to the problem and now it recognizes my usb drive and does not restart.
Thanks for your assistance. That makes me think that the problem was
initiated when a Microsoft Update patch was installed. After I run another
Microsoft Update, if the problem returns, then I'll know for sure.
Thanks for posting the resolution. Glad you got it fixed.
