xp reboots indefinitely

I'm unable to get XP to start. It will post, get to the
splash screen and load windows, and just before I would
expect to see the start screen, it reboots. It will do
this indefinitely, until I turn it off. When I press F8,
I get the option to start in safe mode, last good
configuration, etc. But none of the options will work.
I booted up using the installation disk and tried to
reinstall. The installation seemed to go fine, but when
it was going to start the first time, it went right back
to the problem. I used the installation disk to boot to
the command prompt and tried fixboot and fixmbr. No
change. It may be a virus-I installed it about a month
ago, and haven't installed virus software. Any
suggestions?

"THE VIRUS"? Any idea which virus? BTW, this computer is
not on the internet, or networked, and I don't share
files. It's just a machine for my 8 year old to play her
games. That's why I didn't install virus software.

In the preceding text, you mention that you think that it may be a virus.

But, later on in the thread, it looks like you are somewhat quizzical about a
response that proclaims that it is the virus that is causing your woes. If I'm
reading correctly, it looks like you are saying that you don't know why it would
be a virus since the computer you are having trouble with is not connected to
the Internet.

So, are you really saying that, you have installed Windows XP on a blank
hard-drive on your daughter's computer and that it has never been connected to
the Internet? And you have not been able to boot her computer up yet?

I had almost this *exact* situation occur recently with my
XP machine. No new installs, no new drivers, fully up-to-
date virus checker, etc.

What I think happened was that Media Player choked on an
AVI I played and corrupted everything. (I was playing
several 'the night before') The reason I say this is
because the night before (when it was working) I clicked
on a browser bookmark that I have used many times - but
got a Media Player error. Tried 2-3 more times, same
thing. Then typed in the site and went on my way. The
next morning however, my machine was in perpetual reboot
mode.

I too did everything this person mentioned - command
prompts, safe mode - nothing worked. Finally spent 2.5
hours on the long distance support call to have to
completely reinstall everything. The registry and the
post-install registry backaups were totally corrupted.

I am still recovering data and reinstalling programs form
this error.

The computer is a frankenstein's monster that I created
from pieces and parts from here and there. The HD is a
used Maxtor that I formatted before I installed it, and
installed XP. Is it possible for a virus to survive
formatting? The other possibility for infection from the
games that I installed. A couple of them were on
diskettes (boot sector virus?) So it is possible that it
is a virus, but unlikely. Also, it has been working fine
for a month or so.

You are not alone!!
I am experiencing the same thing!
And although I have reinstalled, the problem still is there.
I have learned with time that it only occurs when the computer is cold
started(been off for a while).
I am looking into possible hardware or drivers.
OR a system confict.

If you installed recently & connected to the internet;
Your Firewall is not activated
You have no AV app
Its likely you have a virus even if you have other probs.

The AV software has allways been active and the firewall.
Tonight she got more stable so I can now work.
My blue screens(memory, improper system config) problem seem to be in part
due to an upgrade to the bios. After flashing, settings were not right for
my system.
I just recently went through the lists of settings and made the appropriate
changes.
She now boots the way I remember.

If you built her a month ago consider maybe all settings are where the need
to be.
