XP Professional Start up problems

Hi

I would appreciate any help

When I start my PC, XP professional starts in the normal way.

However when it gets to the blue screen where I nomally click on the avatar
/ icon and log in. The avatar / icon is not there.

So I am unable to log in or use the PC at all. Does anyone have any advice?

When you get to that screen hit the Ctrl-Alt-Del keys and see what happens.

Thanks, I have tried that and nothing happens.

It just stays on that screen. The only thing I can do is switch the PC off

If you hold down the "ctrl, alt, del" keys for a few seconds you should get
an old style login dialog box. From there you can type in your login name &
password then login as normal.

Any good.??
