The sticky label on the side of my old computer (6Gb) has been misplaced are
the numbers in my old computer.I need to reinstall onto a larger hard
disk(80Gb) in my new computer. Is it in the registry? Can someone assist.

Chris

I doubt that a system that was built with a 6Gb hard drive was 'Designed for
Xp' so a Product ID affixed to the case of the PC would be as unlikely.

If your Xp was an OEM version, then to move to another Motherboard is a
violation of the EULA, so be warned. You will get 'error' messages advising
that the installation cannot proceed should this be the case.

If your Xp was an Upgrade Edition, then you'll need to have aqualifying
Windows Op Sys CD on hand to insert at some point during the installation.

To identify Windows Product ID and that of other apps: download Belarc
Adviser [that is if you have enough space to accomodate the file]. It
provides all this info in a HTML page: print it off and store some place safe.

Download and run the linked program from your old machine. It will show you
what your Windows Product Key is.

For your information, if you have a COA sticker attached to a computer, you
do not have a RETAIL version of XP but an OEM version. Retail versions come
in a nice folder with an orange CD key on the back. OEM versions come with
the COA sticker that usually gets stuck to a computer. OEM version of XP
are not entitled to be transferred to a different PC.

If you Product Key was on a label affixed to the case of your old
computer, you did not have a retail license; you had an OEM license.
This cannot be transferred to a new computer. Buy a new license for the
new computer. By your own admission, you have an OEM license for
WinXP. An OEM version must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally
a motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire PC) and is _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM license, once
installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under _any_
circumstances.
