Windows XP Professional Sp2 corporate edition

Hello, I hope somone can help me with this.

Recently I Put and old hard drive in my computer trying to copy my old
files from it. I set my computer to boot from my c: drive "Windows XP
Professional Sp2 'corporate edition' (80gb WD Caviar SE)" and i set the
old hard drive, wich was a working version of windows 98/NT, in my
computer as a slave drive. The wierd thing is When it booted it was
booting from the old hard drive. and the keyboard and mouse both seemed
to freeze. So i turned it off Took out the old hard drive. I left my
80gb in and went to start my computer.

My computer started normally.

But instead of starting windows it said.

Boot from CD:
Boot from CD:
Error with operating system.

After this i hooked up one of my other hard drives. It was running
windows xp professional and it worked fine and normally. the only
difference is that it wasnt sp2, and i tried to read the 80gb with that
other hard drive and it said that the partition was RAW. And when i
clicked on it said asked me to format the drive. but i didnt.

first i started the computer with a 98 floppy and ran 'fdisk'
It said the ussual things. Unreconized partition ect...But then when i
went to the information part. It said the partition was NTFS. AFter
this i am lost.

I tried using Active@ Partition Recovery v 3.0 to fix the partition and
Master boot record. It did a restore but it still didnt work. Then i
tried using the Recovery consule from the microsoft web site.
I used the proper recovery consule. for xp professional sp2. and i used
the 'fixboot' and 'fixmbr' option in the recovery consule. Then when i
went to start it, It didnt do anything.

It said the normal boot up things

S.M.A.R.T. hard drive cappibility. Enabled

Boot from CD:
Boot from CD:

....................................
Then is just stoped and the computer doesnt do anything else. and i
noticed that the floppy drive Light was on And didnt turn off until the
computer turned off.

Now after i used the recovery consule my other hard drive OS does read
it and says its NTFS partition and i can see the files. But i cant get
to the folders i made private under my login name.

I would GREATLY appreciate it if someone can help me with this.

Forget All the details.

I just wanted to no if i can get my hard drive to boot. It still has
all the files and is still a ntfs partition. I've already ran recovery
option on windows cd. And wrote a new master boot record with 'fixmbr'
and i ran 'bootfix' and i ran out of ideas that can make it boot.

Many thanks to anyone who can help

Not unless the two computers were virtually identical, no.

Normally, and assuming a retail license (many factory-installed OEM
installations are BIOS-locked to a specific chipset and therefore are
*not* transferable to a new motherboard - check yours before starting),
unless the new motherboard is virtually identical (same chipset, same
IDE controllers, same BIOS version, etc.) to the one on which the WinXP
installation was originally performed, you'll need to perform a repair
(a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

Changing a Motherboard or Moving a Hard Drive with WinXP Installed

The "why" is quite simple, really, and has nothing to do with
licensing issues, per se; it's a purely technical matter, at this point.
You've pulled the proverbial hardware rug out from under the OS. (If
you don't like -- or get -- the rug analogy, think of it as picking up a
Cape Cod style home and then setting it down onto a Ranch style
foundation. It just isn't going to fit.) WinXP, like Win2K before it,
is not nearly as "promiscuous" as Win9x when it comes to accepting any
old hardware configuration you throw at it. On installation it
"tailors" itself to the specific hardware found. This is one of the
reasons that the entire WinNT/2K/XP OS family is so much more stable
than the Win9x group.

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will also probably require re-activation, unless you have a
Volume Licensed version of WinXP Pro installed. If it's been more than
120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

A I read this, I am assuming that you want to recover all your files
from the old hard drive but you want to do this by booting from the new
PC/HD which has Windows XP Professional.

You should follow the following steps:

1) Remove your old HD completely from the system, and make sure your new
HD is properly installed and that it is set to be master (normally
default on all new HDs)

2) Inser your XP CD in the CD-Drive and now boot from it;

3) Start installing the OS using clean installation process. This may
mean that you will lose all your data from the new drive but if it is
completely new then you have nothing to lose;

4) Once the Os is installed, reboot the system at least twice to make
sure it is rebooting normally without the CD in the drive;

5) Now install/fix the old HD in the system and make it slave;

6) reboot the system once more so that the old HD is recognized as a
slave and that you can read the files using Windows explorer;

7) Now copy your data from old HD to the new HD and when you are certain
everything has been copied, wipe clean the old drive using format
command of Windows XP Professional;

Hope this helps.

Thanks you have been a great help, but i still wonder before i try
anything else. I would like to boot from my 80gb hard drive that has
xp professional sp2 corporate. because it has my lisence key and i cant
use it on my other hard drive.

The other hard drive is a 9.8gb seagate with windows xp proffessional.
And it was in my computer before i bought and installed the 80gb. After
i bought the 80 gb i installed it and took out the 9.8 gb

the reason i would like to save this hard drive is because it has many
programs and files and personal data that i cannot get back. For 1 when
the OS did run, i made my "my documents' foler private and i cannot
access it as a slave.

it says.

F:documents and setting/patrick is not accesible
access is denied.

i have tried many file restore programs, but i have to buy them, and i
dont have any money at the moment.

Greatly appreciate all help and help i have already gotten
