XP Prof - "Unmountable_Boot_Volume"

I've been running XP Professional on an HP EVO N610c with
no issues, until today. I may have rushed the shutdown and
now while rebooting the system cycles through the normal
boot screen to the Safe mode, last valid config, normal
boot screen. All selections result in the same cycling
screens. At one unrepeatable point I received a message
indicating "Unmountable_Boot_Volume".

Can anyone suggest a boot volume restoration process? My
help desk advised me that a complete reimage is necessary.
I just can't buy that as a solution.

Thanks, in advance!
