I have xp running ok - have insatalled a single SATA and
its picked up in the bios and by device manager - but not
listed as a drive in my computer any ideas

Is the drive formatted? Is it assigned a drive letter?

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the following screen,
select Disk Management.... the drive should now appear on the right hand
side of the screen from where you can partition and format it (if required)
and assign it a drive letter.

Sounds like you need to partition and format the drive.

Conrol panel/administrative tools/computer management/storage-disk
management.
