Whenever I try to do a search (file document etc.) nothing
appears and the hourglass stays on. Control-Alt-Del tells
me that Search results is not responding. Any clues?

Keith how many programs are you running? Don't foreget that there are those programs in the taskbar that are programs. Close any not needed. If that dosen't work check how much RAM you have. You need at least 256MB to run Win XP smoothly. Don't foreget to click on the arrow. If the whole taskbars filled our more than a forth your running to much our you can upgrade to a Gig.

Please open explorer and go to %systemroot%/inf
Locate the Srchasst.inf,Right click this INF file
and choose install,
remark: this behavior you CD , Because this file
from the i386 folder
this INF folder is a hidden folder, you need doing
some work .
