XP Pro

Was running Home Edition and was unable to backup files, etc. Finallyt found
out that backup was not installed by default. The Emachine did not come with
XP disc so could not install backup manually.

Upgraded to XP Pro. The backup utility did not install. File search did
not turn up NTbackup.msl on the disc.

I am tired of doing the copy/write thing. What do I do now?

As you can tell I am not a geek.

Thanks for your advice and/or help.

Hi

If the installation didn't, for some reason, install the backup utility, try
typing the following from Start>Run with the XP Pro CD in the cd drive:

expand X:\i386\ntbackup.ex_ %SystemRoot%\system32\ntbackup.exe

where X is the letter of the cd drive. Please note the space between the _
and %.

However the backup utility was downloadable at
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi Also see

Upgraded to XP Pro.

Just to get the backup utility? I'm sorry you didn't ask about this here
before taking that extreme step. The included Windows backup utility is much
poorer than practically any third-party backup utility; it's probably the
worst choice available. You could have bought a much better backup for
significantly less than the XP Professional Upgrade.

If that's not a typo, you looked for the wrong file. It's ntbackup.msi, and
you should find it in \ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP

If it were me, I would *still* spend the money to get a third-party backup
utility.

Sorry I took so long to reply - bronchitis kept me down for three weeks.

I tried your suggestion without results. The files were not found. Thank
you for your help.

So far nothing has worked. Which backup programs would you suggest?

Thanks for your help.

Exactly what have you tried and exactly what were the results?

Which backup programs would you suggest?

Although I've never used it personally, if I were in the market for a backup
program today, based on a combination of price and recommendations made by
others I trust, I'd probably get Acronis True Image.
