Does XP Pro have a backup option?

The hard drive in my wife's Dell D-600 with XP Pro died and was replaced
by the dealer with a new install of XP Pro. We lost all added
applications and data files. I just got Humpty-Dumpty back together
again and need some back up plan for the next time a HD dies.

I am thinking about ordering an external USB 2 encloursure and
dedication an old (but good) 3.5 inch WD40 to become a backup box for my
wife's Dell D-600 Latitude.

Do I need to obtain a 3rd party backup program or is there a backup
option within XP Pro? I am a newbie to XP Pro.

Since your installation was a factory installation it might not have come
with the XP Backup program..which normally would need to be installed
seperately from the CD under ValueAdded.
Might I suggest a program that will not only back up but also image
partitions or clone the whole HD.

The program can also make an Emergency Start disc which allows you to
"recover" the backup/image you have created.

The Backup program that comes with XP Pro is essentially a POS. Because
having reliable and easy to use backup and recovery you need to invest in a
decent third party alternative. Personally I use Acronis TrueImage which
easily backs up to USB and DVD drives. You can schedule it to do incremental
or differential backups and you can restore individual files/folders or the
full system. Do a google search.

Dell does not remove ntbackup.exe. It is supplied installed, in fact.

No, with XP Pro it should already be installed. It -should- be available at
Start; Programs; Accessories; System Tools; Backup.

So will ntbackup.exe. It's called the ASR Disk (Automated System Recovery).
It's meant for catastrophic rebuild of the drive. Or, you can simply
recover one file, a folder, or any combination of the above, as desired.

Please don't speak to issues you have no experience with.

That said there are some advantages to an imaging program. Norton's Ghost
and True Image are two of the better ones for relative newbies.
In XP Pro, look for ntbackup.exe or sometimes it gets renamed to
backup.exe; I forget which way Dell does it. It might also appear in one of
the shells Dell provides with their machines; don't recall.
