XP Pro upgrade issues

I have a win2k pro desktop that was supposed to be
upgraded to XP Pro. My Help Desk guy actually booted from
the XP Pro disk and did and complete install (no
formatting). So I have the Windows 2000 in \winnt and
winxp in \windows. I can boot to either XP or Win2k.

Now I still want to upgrade the win2k pro to XP and keep
all the desktop settings. Can I just boot win2k and run
the upgrade? Or must I do something else with the XP pro
install?

Thanks!

it really depends on the xp pro cd you have.
is it retail, is it OEM, is it Volume License?
Depending on what you have you may be able to just simply do an upgrade
install on top of your 2000 pro. That would be the normal upgrade path
provided by MS. During install, when asked where to install, indicate the
directory that you want to install in. Setup will bark at you saying there
is already a windows in stallation in that location and you confirm that you
want that location anyway.
It'll tell you something along the lines of: you will be deleting the old os
files and replace them with new ones and you will no longer be able to use
the old os. Duh.
If your media (CD) is capable of 'upgrading' it will carry the old settings
forward.
