I recently upgraded my armada 1750 from ME to XP PRO. All went well until XP
PRO desktop came on. Then got white screen covering most of display(except
25mm top and r/h side.Comp locked. I had to shut down with mains switch. Now
I have only Compaq splash and no 'C' drive recognition at all. Armada has 400
cpu and 128 ram. Hdd is 10 gig with 2 partitions 2. ... and 7. ... Have
tried to re-format disk using dban but again does not find hard disk??? Any
suggestions?
Much appreciated.

Restore the system to ME and run the Upgrade Advisor from the XP cd to
ensure that you should be attempting this or not. If I had the same laptop
I certainly would not upgrade to XP (any edition) For what it is worth,
HP/Compaq has not certified your computer for XP. None of the Armada 1750
63xx or 6400 series laptops have XP device drivers available for your
computer.

XP Pro requires 1.5 GB of hard drive space just to install. Your 2GB
partition is too small for XP Pro to operate well, let alone take
applications.

I strongly suggest that you return your laptop to ME and consider a new
laptop or desktop if you need to run XP Pro. Pro is a fine operating
system, but your laptop cannot run it without the Compaq drivers that it
would take to make XP work. That is a problem with laptops. If the
manufacturer doesn't make XP drivers, you cannot use XP.

FYI, reinstalling WinMe shouldn't be necessary to run the Upgrade
Advisor. The OP can boot from the WinXP installation CD and run it from
there.

Agreed. This particular laptop is a poor candidate for upgrading.

Additional note: I think you are stuck with the XP Pro because retailers
will not give you a refund once you have opened the box. It is worth a try,
but expect a polite 'no'. As far as a new laptop, that will come with XP
preinstalled, so you will still be stuck with the copy of XP Pro you bought.
If your copy of XP Pro is marked Upgrade then you should go to a local
dealer who builds computers on demand and tell him about your copy of XP Pro
and ask him if he can sell you a computer but use your copy of XP (he can).
Or you can sell the XP Pro on eBay. People do this all the time. Just say
in your item description what happened. Expect to lose a little on the deal
but you will get some of your money back.

Thanks for info and realise now folly of XP/Armada. Problem:
I cannot return to ME. Bios does'nt see hard drive at all. Can't boot from

problems but also no hard drive. MS '6 floppy disk setup hangs on 1st disk'

Tried 2 re-format progs but to no avail. Prepared to wipe slate clean and
re- install ME as no important files on laptop. lso tried 'fdisk' and

If you have the QuickRestore Kit (2 cd's), put the System Recovery cd in the
drive and then power down. Power up again and it should boot from the SR
cd. Follow the instructions. The Application Recovery cd should be loaded
after the operating system is restored. It contains some of the drivers and
system utilities, such as Hibernate and keyboard enhancement utilities as
well as applications. You will be able to select which items to install or
not.

If the restoration process does not start, it may be necessary to hold down
a key when starting the computer. My first guess would be "R".

Note: I have never owned this model computer and the above info is from web
searches on the Compaq site.

You can create a setup floppy on another computer by going to bootdisk.com
and downloading the setup floppy of your choice. Download to the desktop
and double click on the bootdisk icon to start writing a floppy in A: The
reason that you cannot format the drive with a Windows 98 floppy is that it
does not have the needed files. You need a setup floppy that has fdisk and
format on it. Fdisk does not care what file system is on the hard drive.

If the BIOS is no longer recognizing the presence of the hard drive,
there's no OS or software solution that will help. It would appear that
you've coincidentally suffered a catastrophic hardware failure just
while you were trying to restore WinMe. Sorry that I don't have better
news for you. A new hard drive would probably resolve the issue, but I
doubt that it would be worth spending any money to repair so old a laptop.

The BIOS is not a partition, but a chip/program on the mobo.
To access the BIOS you press the proper key BEFORE the
computer has completed the POST (boot sequence test). This
key often ESC or F2, but can be any of several keys, even a
combination of keys.

Once in the BIOS you can set the boot order, within the
limits of the Compaq BIOS.

You can buy a new, bigger hard drive, but you can buy a new
Dell laptop for less than the cost of the upgrade CD and the
hardware needed to make it work (hard drive and RAM).

You can sell the upgrade (with all the packaging, papers,
product key and a copy of your purchase receipt on eBay for
nearly the amount you paid. How much you can get will
depend on the current price range shown on
www.pricewatch.com which tracks on-line store prices.

At some point upgrades cease to be viable since new is so
much less expensive than it used to be.

CD option not available due to missing bios partition on this model. All
options must be from floppy or possibly temp hard drive connection to other
laptop or (if an eide cable could be found) to another desktop. Dban takes
about 10 secs to run so even it can't find hard drive.

Jim, sorry but the armada 1750 needs its own small partition at the
beginning of the drive and must be installed before os. Bios configuration
resides here so without it access to any bios changes is nill. From the

If fdisk does not find the hard drive, stop. The expense of recovering from
what causes that is more than the cost of replacing the system.

You can create a setup floppy on another computer by going to bootdisk.com
and downloading the setup floppy of your choice. Download to the desktop
and double click on the bootdisk icon to start writing a floppy in A: The
reason that you cannot format the drive with a Windows 98 floppy is that
it does not have the needed files. You need a setup floppy that has fdisk
and format on it. Fdisk does not care what file system is on the hard
drive.

Thanks for info and realise now folly of XP/Armada. Problem:
I cannot return to ME. Bios does'nt see hard drive at all. Can't boot
from
cd. Due to no bios partition cannot change boot sequence. Win fat 32
emergency floppy won't accept drive letter over 'B'. Compaq 'DIAG' shows
no
problems but also no hard drive. MS '6 floppy disk setup hangs on 1st
disk'
'inspecting hardware configuration.
Tried 2 re-format progs but to no avail. Prepared to wipe slate clean and
re- install ME as no important files on laptop. lso tried 'fdisk' and
'format' but as expected 98 floppy does't recognise ntfs. Going bald

Additional note: I think you are stuck with the XP Pro because
retailers
will not give you a refund once you have opened the box. It is worth a
try,
but expect a polite 'no'. As far as a new laptop, that will come with
XP
preinstalled, so you will still be stuck with the copy of XP Pro you
bought.
If your copy of XP Pro is marked Upgrade then you should go to a local
dealer who builds computers on demand and tell him about your copy of XP
Pro
and ask him if he can sell you a computer but use your copy of XP (he
can).
Or you can sell the XP Pro on eBay. People do this all the time. Just
say
in your item description what happened. Expect to lose a little on the
deal
but you will get some of your money back.

Restore the system to ME and run the Upgrade Advisor from the XP cd to
ensure that you should be attempting this or not. If I had the same
laptop I certainly would not upgrade to XP (any edition) For what it
is
worth, HP/Compaq has not certified your computer for XP. None of the
Armada 1750 63xx or 6400 series laptops have XP device drivers
available
for your computer.

XP Pro requires 1.5 GB of hard drive space just to install. Your 2GB
partition is too small for XP Pro to operate well, let alone take
applications.

I strongly suggest that you return your laptop to ME and consider a
new
laptop or desktop if you need to run XP Pro. Pro is a fine operating
system, but your laptop cannot run it without the Compaq drivers that
it
would take to make XP work. That is a problem with laptops. If the
manufacturer doesn't make XP drivers, you cannot use XP.

I recently upgraded my armada 1750 from ME to XP PRO. All went well
until
XP
PRO desktop came on. Then got white screen covering most of
display(except
25mm top and r/h side.Comp locked. I had to shut down with mains
switch.
Now
I have only Compaq splash and no 'C' drive recognition at all. Armada
has
400
cpu and 128 ram. Hdd is 10 gig with 2 partitions 2. ... and 7. ...
Have
tried to re-format disk using dban but again does not find hard
disk???
Any
suggestions?
Much appreciated.

Downloaded me boot disk from bootdisk.com,it installs virtual drive as C:
therefore looks like d kaputt. or poss virus??? format and fdisk say that
drive contains no valid fat or fat 32 partition but as C is now virtual drive
they would. Drive must have failed at time of installation ?? Thanks for
trying to sort this out. I will keep thread open for a bit incase?? hope
against hope.

Thanks chaps. I will persist when I have time but is not the be-all and
end-all of life (apart from that of compaq 1750). Jim NYC is a long way from
England. New laptop better bet. 1st time on forum and found it most
informative. Armada is hand-down from daughter so now obsolete like me Thanks
again. If I can end this thread I will??

| Thanks chaps. I will persist when I have time but is not
the be-all and
| end-all of life (apart from that of compaq 1750). Jim NYC
is a long way from
| England. New laptop better bet. 1st time on forum and
found it most
| informative. Armada is hand-down from daughter so now
obsolete like me Thanks
| again. If I can end this thread I will??
